Microalgae-Based Photobioreactor and monitoring technologies: Fully Operational at the Thriasio Wastewater Treatment Plant

25 November 2024

The microalgae-based photobioreactor system and the related monitoring technologies at the Thriasio Wastewater Treatment Plant (TWWTP) in Greece are fully operational since November 2024. The RHE-MEDiation innovative technology aims to tackle the environmental challenges in the Thriasio Plain, located 25 km west of Athens, where seawater and marine sediments of the Elefsis Gulf are polluted due to anthropogenic intervention.

By harnessing microalgae-based technology, the system aims to further reduce chemical contamination caused by emerging micropollutants (EMPs), which pose a serious threat to ecosystems and water quality.

This sustainable and energy-efficient approach enhances the treatment process at the WWTP, contributing to cleaner water and a healthier environment. Microalgae technology represents a key step towards mitigating pollution and supporting long-term ecological restoration efforts in the area.
