Real-Time Marine Monitoring Launched in Elefsis Gulf: EYDAP and HCMR Deploy Autonomous Robotic Buoys under the RHE-MEDiation Project

20 May 2025

Our Greek partners, EYDAP and the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR), carried out a major field operation in the coastal area adjacent to the Thriasio Wastewater Treatment Plant in the Elefsis Gulf.

The one-day survey was conducted aboard the renowned research vessel R/V AEGAEO, operated by HCMR. During this mission, the research teams successfully deployed Scylla and Cariddi—two state-of-the-art autonomous robotic buoys equipped with advanced sensor systems developed by MDM. This marks the official launch of real-time environmental monitoring in the area, reinforcing the project’s commitment to innovative, science-driven solutions for reducing chemical pollution in Mediterranean waters.

Thanks to the seamless collaboration with the MDM Team, data collected by the robotic buoys was transmitted in real-time to the corresponding digital platforms, ensuring immediate access for scientific analysis and integration into wider ocean observation systems. This step forward not only supports the project's objectives but also contributes to the long-term vision of building a Digital Twin of the Ocean.
