RHE-MEDiation showcased to Greek academic community
19 November 2025
Entitled "From Research to Action: Marine Environmental Protection & Water Challenges in the Mediterranean Sea", more than 50 scholars, researchers, educators, and students from Greek Universities participated, both online and physically, in a workshop, organized and hosted by EYDAP, on November 19th.
The workshop aimed to inform, raise awareness, and empower the academic community on the importance of protecting the marine environment from chemical pollution. Within the framework of the RHE-MEDiation project, presentations were delivered by EYDAP, HCMR, CNR, and TUBITAK, highlighting innovative solutions—such as the use of microalgae—for identifying, assessing, measuring, and removing chemical pollutants from urban wastewater. The speakers also shared their experience from the design, operation, and scientific findings of the project’s three Pilot Units in Greece, Italy, and Turkey.
During the workshop, Mr. Thomaidis, Professor of Chemistry at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens presented the scientific methodology and tools used concerning the identification and measurement of PFAS and “forever” chemicals, whereas EYDAP’s executives gave presentations on issues regarding the holistic and synergetic approach developed in Europe regarding water management strategy, as well as the challenges by the new European Directive on urban wastewater treatment.
This workshop provided an important opportunity for members of the academic community and young scientists to share knowledge, explore emerging scientific approaches, and deepen their understanding of how nature-based solutions and innovative technologies contribute to the protection of the marine environment.
