RHE-MEDiation Advances in Bulgaria Egypt, Moldova, and Marocco

03 January 2026

The RHE-MEDiation project is bringing together Associated Regions to demonstrate the feasibility, replicability, and scalability of its innovative approaches to preventing, monitoring, and remediating chemical pollution in the Mediterranean Sea.

Selected projects from Moldova, Egypt, Morocco, and Bulgaria are actively testing microalgae-based bioremediation technologies, spatial data tools, and stakeholder-driven strategies to improve water quality and reduce environmental pressure. Highlights include:

  • GISMART RHE-MEDiation (Moldova): Using GREEN DUNE® photobioreactors and local GIS systems to clean the Ișnovăț River sub-basin.
  • Clean Port Said (Egypt): Mapping pollution hotspots and assessing RHE-MEDiation solutions for the Port Said coastal system.
  • REMEDTAR (Morocco): Continuous water quality monitoring and local adaptation of remediation technologies in Tangier.
  • SINAQUA (Egypt): Treating high-load agricultural drainage entering the Suez Canal with microalgae-based systems.
  • SCeNiC (Bulgaria): Theoretical replication of RHE-MEDiation technologies and stakeholder Living Lab at the Port of St. Nicolas.
